Topic: Organ Donation - A Slightly More Advanced Form Of Recycling
Speaker: Gordon Kirkland , award winning and best selling author and humorist
Described as ‘one of North America’s premier humorists, Kirkland brings a light and enjoyable presentation. He has a great deal of experience speaking at colleges, universities, conferences, corporate events and service groups all over North America.
In September of 2013, he was close to death, in the care of the palliative care team at Ridge Meadows Hospital in Maple Ridge. He was at end stage of liver failure due to non-alcoholic cirrhosis. By mid-September he was lapsing in and out of consciousness. After spending his conscious moments on a weekend with his wife of 40 years planning his funeral, and preparing for imminent death, he received the call that virtually no one expected him to get. A liver had been found for a lifesaving transplant.
Now, Kirkland is a vocal spokesman supporting organ donation. His current presentation details the story of his close call with death, and the need for more organ donors in BC.
