Glorious Day at the Polio Walk

On May 14, Barb, Becky, Chris, Joy, Keith and Richmond Rotaractors formed the Team Richmond to support the walk. We all enjoyed the 4.5km stroll on the Westminster Quay boardwalk along the Fraser River.

Many thanks go out to the organizing clubs: New West, Burnaby, Vancouver Cambie, Burnaby Interact and Rotaract for an enjoyable event where we met some old acquaintances and many Rotary friends.

We stopped for lunch at Barbara and Ken's home along the Quay and enjoyed great company and conversation. Lounging on one of their many decks, sipping our iced teas to watch the world go by, was a fabulous way to punctuate Rotary friendship. To Barbara and Ken, many, many thanks for opening your home to some weary road travellers.

By the way, year to date 2016, there were 5 cases of endemic polio in Afghanistan, up from 1 last year.  In Pakistan, there were 9 cases, down from 22 last year. Source: http://www.polioeradication.org/dataandmonitoring/poliothisweek.aspx Whilst the noose is tightening, and Nigeria has been polio free for a year and India for 3 years.....efforts must continue.

About Kenny Chiu

Rotary is a professional business service culture based on building relationships. The purpose behind a Rotary Classification Talk is to educate members about one's profession, background education, family life, career path, personal interests and to demonstrate one's credibility through your knowledge of your vocation.

Kenny Chiu was sponsored by James Hsieh and joined Rotary in March 2015. We learned from his talk of his humble beginnings, his journey to Canada, his education on the Prairies and his career path since then. Family values are important to him as are his conservative way of life.

He has served and is serving on various agencies and organizations, he has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, for his commendable contributions to the community and Canada.

Politics called to him last fall when he ran for political office, and although disappointed in not winning, in looking back he does not miss the stress that would have caused himself and his family. Thank You Kenny, we got to know you a bit better, which is the objective of a Rotary Classification Talk.

Congratulation Barb & Ken, the proud first time grandparents
