Our Speaker on Wed June 15 was Rotarian Steve Rutledge, his presentation was to discuss the culture and stuggles of the most heavily bombed country per capita, in the world...Laos. The country was decimated from the secret war of the 1960's and 70's, during the Vietnam War. Backed by the CIA, there was an average of one sortee of bombs dropped every 8 minutes for 9 years.
For the last 8 years, Steve has bettered the lives of the rural villagers in Northern Laos with the construction of permanent water supplies, schools, student support and smaller projects. His focus however is water purification. By the end of the month, Steve will have distributed family water filters for about 15,000 people stretching over dozens of villages. The result has been nothing short of a miracle for the residents, dropping infant mortality from 8.1% to almost nothing and significantly increasing productivity.
The exchange of banners is a significant tradition of Rotary and serves as a tangible symbol of our international fellowship. Rotarians travelling to distant locations often take banners to exchange at "make up" meetings as a token of friendship. Many clubs use the decorative banners they have received for attractive displays at club meetings and district events.
