Bike Commuting

Laura Jane is the Director of Corporate Engagement and Events at HUB Cycling. She touched on many topics including the health and environmental benefits of bike commuting and the work that HUB Cycling does to get more people on bikes in Metro Vancouver.

There is much to do in the area of improving infrastructure and supporting education so that people of all ages can feel comfortable biking or biking to work or school. Her objective with events like Bike to Work Week is to create more awareness and education of biking and get people to try bike commuting. She works with community groups and schools to spread the word and encourage people to explore the use of bikes.  Her statistics of usage growth suggests that there is a strong trend towards more people getting on their bikes in the region.

Our members peppered her with questions and opinions, indicating there is keen interest on this topic and perhaps there could be some synergy between Rotary and HUB to be explored.

Push Up Challenge Wrap-up

With all the monies now in hand, the Rotary Club of Richmond is happy to say we raised $7,000 from the push-up challenge in November 2015. $3,500 will go towards our club for community needs and $3,500 to Polio Plus which will be matched 2 to 1 by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and also matched 2 to 1 by the Government of Canada, that means total of $17,500 towards Polio Eradication.

Many thanks again to the participants, Dean, Chris and Antonio for their training for push-up night and for motivating all our friends and relatives to pitch in many generous dollars to our fundraiser.  Those of us who did the push-ups are grateful to all those who sponsored us with their pledges.

A portion of the community need has already been promised towards a Vein Viewer device for Richmond Hospital in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Richmond Sunset.  Thanks to all for supporting the Rotary Club of Richmond and our work of making Good Things Happen.

Gift of $500,000 to Polio

A very generous gift of $500,000 has been made to The Rotary Foundation – PolioPlus by the late Fred and Bette Cotton. Fred was a member of the Rotary Club of Vancouver. With the Gates match and the Government of Canada match this gift means $2.5 million will be directed to polio eradication. Read more
