Wed Mar 30 - Greg Brady "God's Hope School Project"

Greg Brady is the co-founder of the Christian elementary school in a slum area of Petion-Ville, Haiti. The school comprises 3 levels of kindergarten through grade 6. It is government registered and monitored.

They do not charge tuition unlike most other schools in the country because the families simply cannot afford it and many children would not be in school otherwise.  It is their belief that by giving the poorest people a basic education, we give them a chance and some hope for a better life.

Starfish Pack Program

Our speaker on Wednesday March 23 was Bruce Beck,  the current Director of Community Service with the Abbotsford Rotary Club.  Bruce spoke about the  Starfish Packs program which was launched  in 2013 in an Abbotsford school.  Each Friday backpacks full of food are sent home with students whose families are in need. Not only did the family have extra food for the weekend but over time the student school absentee rate went down, the connection between the families  and the teachers improved and the children felt  more ‘valued' at home as they were bringing home much needed provisions.

Since then the Starfish Packs program has been replicated by other Clubs in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Aldergrove, Langley, Delta, Coquitlam, Vernon and Duncan with nearly 500 students receiving weekly backpacks. The food is provided by sponsors and packed by various community groups .

Starfish Packs was featured in the national Rotary Canada magazine in 2015.  The program has recognized by several local and regional awards, including being named the Most Outstanding Community Service Project in Rotary District 5050 at last year’s District conference.

Several members in our club have expressed interest in taking on this project in partnership with the Richmond Sunrise club.
