Rotary On Ice need your support!

Thank you to our members who had purchased tickets or donated money to sponsor kids from the Boys and Girls Club to go to the Friday Oct 16 hockey game in the Pacific Coliseum. Our District is looking for more support to meet the 350 tickets committment. Tickets are $16.00 and $5.00 goes towards Polio and will be credited to our club's polio account. (Ticket info) or talk to Keith if you like to support.

"Last year, we had a full bus - Rotarians, kids from Boys and Girls Club and the Interactors. So who got the most out of the day? It was us. The laughs, the energy, the bridging of the generations made this night memorable for all the Rotarians and me." - Tsawwassen Rotarian Tom Smith

Nigeria Declared Polio-Free

On Sep 25 The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it has officially removed Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic. In the months ahead, our dedication will remain as important as ever, as we work to keep Nigeria polio-free and to eliminate polio from its final strongholds in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

On Nov 20, The Rotary Club of Richmond will again have a Push Up Challenge raising funds for the Rotary Club of Richmond Foundation and for End Polio. Help us to make this happen by pledging one of our members or participate in the challenge and start training. Keith is training hard to achieve his past record of 70 push ups in 90 seconds. Mind you, it was his record before he became officially senior. More info will follow.

Rotary Celebrates 3 Decades of PolioPlus

During a speech to Rotary leaders in February 1985, then Rotary President Dr. Carlos Canseco announced the commitment to help control polio worldwide.  In its early years, PolioPlus was dedicated to fundraising for immunization efforts.

In May 1988 Rotary announced that the campaign, which aimed to raise $120 million, had raised nearly $220 million in contributions and pledges. That same year, the World Health Assembly set a goal of worldwide polio eradication and launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) with Rotary as one of its partners. At the time, polio paralyzed more than 1,000 children worldwide every day and 125 countries were polio-endemic.

Since the launch of the GPEI, the global incidence of polio cases has decreased by 99 percent. Now that 99 percent of the world’s population lives in regions certified polio-free, the goal of eradication is closer than ever. Polio eradication is A must-win battle in the global war on disease.

Be a part of history and help Rotary achieve a polio-free world.
