Oct 7 Meeting Highlights

Thanks to our Presenters Vera Sun and Richard Cai from NTDTV. Vera spoke about The Renaissance of Traditional Chinese Culture. We learned that China was once known as the "Land of the Divine", and its people believed their culture was a gift from the heavens. We could say that ever since the earliest establishment of Chinese culture, Chinese people has embraced the concept of oneness of heaven (universe) and mankind. The way to achieve that, in Chinese language, is called cultivation practice, a generic term for the practice of mind and body transcendence that will allow us to achieve oneness with the heaven.

Throughout China’s history, there have been numerous schools of cultivation, for example, Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. The ethical values derived from teachings of cultivation practice played an essential role in establishing and maintaining morality in China. These values emphasize virtues, self-discipline, Reverence for the divine, “Good begets good, evil begets evil”, and so forth.... In recent years, Chinese culture has been enjoyed around the world through spiritual practices, cuisines and performing arts.

Great to see Angela from Richmond Nature Park, she is a guest of Daniel.

End Polio Matching Grants

Polio remains endemic in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Nigeria just declared polio free. Rotary members around the world have committed to end polio. Help us reach a polio-free world and donate today. Every donation that we commit to polio eradication will be matched two for one by both the Canadian Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Richmond Club Push Up Challenge

On Nov 20, our club will be having a Push Up Challenge. Event Chair Keith will be up against younger members Chris, Antonio and Daniel. Keith's record was 70 push up in 90 seconds.

Can we count on your support? Pledge one of the above participants or ask for pledges from your friends. Pledges can be made by flat rate or per push up basis. Email Keith Tsukishima for detail.

Half of the proceeds will go towards our Rotary Club of Richmond Foundation for local community projects. The other half will go towards “End Polio”. With the matching grant, every dollar you donate towards Polio will become 5 dollars.

Miles to End Polio

On Nov 21, Rotary General Secretary John Hewko and a team of staffers will join Rotary members to bike up to 104 miles in El Tour de Tucson to raise funds for polio eradication. The event is one of the top cycling events in the U.S., attracting more than 9,000 cyclists each year. John and the Rotary team aim to raise $3.4 million. (Read more)
