Regular Meeting, no speaker. Last week the parking lot was exceptionally busy, if you are within walking distance, consider walking or use sky train if you are close to a station.
I wish some of you were with me today at the District Conference Club Awards because our club was singled out for a special award. As you can see the District and other clubs are very much interested in our success in rebuilding. I was asked by several other clubs how we are so successful. It was a very nice feeling to walk to the podium to accept this certificate on behalf of our club. Many thanks to all the club members who committed themselves to rebuilding. - Acting President Keith Tsukishima
Translink Referendum
A very animated discussion today (May 6) followed our guest speaker Cindy Chan Piper and her presentation on the upcoming referendum for the additional 0.5% provincial sales tax. She presented a brief history of the Translink Board and identified sources of funding. She outlined the "what if" scenarios with and without the additional tax, identifying that based on funding how Translink would cutback, standstill or move forward to address population growth. We were left with impressions of how congestion will continue and get worse unless solutions were found to move people and goods. Whatever the outcome of the vote, the impact will be felt for many years. The discussion, though animated, was very intelligent and thoughtful. There are no easy answers.
Besides our guest speaker Cindy, we welcomed several Rotarian visitors, Roger Wong, Lincoln Young and Michael Chiu.
