Polio\, or poliomyelitis\, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectio
us disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The vir
us spreads from person to person\, typically through contaminated water. I
t can then attack the nervous system. Rotary has been working to eradicate
polio for more than 30 years. Along with our partners\, we have helped i
mmunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We
have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent. Today\, polio remains endemic o
nly in Afghanistan\, Nigeria\, and Pakistan.  Our 3 times Past President
Barbara Duggans will tell us her experience in India earlier this year tak
ing part in Polio Immunization. Before her retirement\, Barb was the Dean
of Design and Communication at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
