Wed Dec 9 Zoom at NOON "Treat the Cause not the Symptom: Underlying Neuroscience of Substance Use and the Key Elements of Psychosocial Recovery" by Dr. Conny Lin

Prior to the COVID pandemic, substance use disorder has been one of the top societal issues impacting BC either visibly (e.g. opioid crisi) or invisibly (e.g. alcohol overuse). This seminar will learn about the fundamental neuroscience behind the disease, understand the psychosocial elements for successful recoveries, and discuss how rotary members can support the “treating the cause not the symptom”.

Dr. Conny Lin is a neuroscientist specialized in substance use disorder. She worked on opioid policy at the Ministry of Health and pharmacies/pharmacists regulator, and ran for public office at the 2017 provincial election. She is now a Medical Advisor of Neurology & Urology.

Chimo Community Services
We were delighted to have Joyce Alisharan, President of Chimo, as our guest speaker. Chimo, in Richmond, was always known as a crisis line that served the community.
We learned from Joyce that CHIMO Community Services is much more than that. They specialize in services geared around assisting the seniors of Richmond.

Richmond has one of the highest percentage of seniors, with over 50% of them being of Asian communities.  The need is overwhelming, prompting CHIMO to hire on an Integrated Case Management Specialist to manage the numerous issues of this huge demand. Sadly, seniors are facing abuse issues, loss of home, disconnectedness from family and much more.  Chimo needs ongoing assistance funding these services.

Special visitors today were Alice Wong, MP (Honorary member of our club) and Henry Yao, MLA Richmond South Centre.  President James and Albert Tseng joined our meeting from Taiwan.

President Elect Suna chaired today's Zoom call, and providing updates on our Club's recent mask project of "Buy One.  We Donate One", with proceeds going to Minoru Seniors Centre. Suna encouraged club members to get behind this project for low income seniors.

And of course, the meeting would not complete without Sgt. At Arms Dave reaching into our jeans, even with physical distancing in place.  All of us attending, expressing great happiness for our good health and good fortune in these most extraordinary and stressful times.

Join us next Wednesday, on Zoom at Noon to hear Conny Lin talk about the neuroscience of substance use. Detail...
