Wednesday Meeting Recap
Jasper Sloan Yip, Leticia Sanchez, and Winnie Cheng, from the Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society (VAHMS), attended Richmond Rotary's meeting to educate our group on their organization and the exciting events coming up next month.

VAHMS is a non-profit organization focused on celebrating Asian-Canadian artists and encouraging their representation in society.  Their mission is to foster, promote and celebrate the arts and cultural diversity that Asian-Canadian communities bring to Canadian society.

VAHM's signature project is explorASIAN, a Metro-Vancouver festival showcasing pan-Asian Canadian arts and culture during Asian Heritage Month in May. This year (2021) is the 25th anniversary of both VAHMS and explorASIAN.

The month-long virtual festival will consist of 30+ virtual events hosted by various pan-Asian communities and organizations in Metro-Vancouver. To learn more, visit: https://explorasian.org/

Albert visited Rotary Club in Taiwan
Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting changes, and Rotarians can extend those networks by visiting other clubs around the world.

Our member Albert is in Taiwan for a few months, he took the opportunity to visit the local Rotary clubs. He was guest speaker at The Rotary Club Kaohsiung Grand Harbor end of March. He talked about  Canada and a brief introduction of or club. The Kaohsiung club was chartered in 1995, they have 28 members, 10 of the members are medical doctors.

Take the opportunity to visit other clubs online and learn about their culture. Search clubs from Club Search | My Rotary or download the free Rotary club locator app and other Rotary apps here...

Club Banner Exchange
One of Rotary’s most colorful traditions is members’ exchanging club banners. Clubs display their own decorative banners at meetings and district events, and Rotarians who travel to other countries often take these banners to exchange with the clubs they visit.

Through the years, our club collected hundreds of banners from Rotarian visitors around the world. We used to display them at every meeting.

Exchanging banners became so popular that the Rotary International Board of Directors was concerned that the practice would place a financial burden on clubs. In 1959, it urged members to “exercise discretion, moderation, and measured judgment in making provision for such exchanges.”

Today, the tradition still continues for some of the Rotary Clubs as a way for clubs to express their friendship.

Anniversary of Richmond Rotary Charter
The Richmond Rotary Club received its charter on April 12, 1962 - 59 years ago today! Three months later, on June 22, 1962, there was the 1st Installation of Officers.

Carlo Hansen was the first charter President, with the first meeting held in the Skyline Hotel, at No. 3 and Sea Island Way. At that charter meeting, regalia were provided by club's from Chilliwack, Mission, New Westminster, Ladner, Marpole, Burnaby and Vancouver, to help get us started.

After originally meeting at the Skyline Hotel, meetings then moved to the Airport Inn, and then King Wah Restaurant, and back to the Skyline Hotel.

Later on, meetings then moved to the Richmond Inn where we stayed from 1975 until June 1984, and then the Richmond Golf and Country Club. In more recent years, meetings then moved from the Radisson Hotel, to the Abercorn Hotel and finally the Four Points by Sheraton Vancouver Airport.
