Before Casa de la Paz, there weren't any other non-profit care home for the elderly in the state of Nayarit. That was why, a few years ago, recognizing the dire need for supportive care for the elderly in Nayarit, Jim and Marilyn Moxin, founded the facility. The vision of Casa de la Paz is to provide a full time care home that offers quality of life care for low resource Mexican seniors. Casa de la Paz will particularly serve the vulnerable elderly in Bucerias. It will open in summer 2024 and the Rotary Club of Richmond will visit the facility to assist with final construction. After a recommendation from our International Service Project Committee, the Rotary Club of Richmond decided to partner with the Rotary Club of Oak Bay to financially support this exciting project and donate and install two solar panels. On October 25th, 2023, our Club held a fundraising dinner at the Little Mexico Cantina in Steveston. Through an auction, donations, sponsorships, balloon purchases and prizes, our club raised $4000. We will receive a matching grant of 50% from the District. A representative of the Mexican Consulate of Vancouver, Jesus Valdes, attended the fundraiser. Next year, the Rotary Clubs of Oak Bay and Richmond will visit Bucerias to volunteer on the construction of the facility and observe the installation of the solar panels.
