September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy Month, one of the 6 causes of Rotary. Thank you PDG Bob Blacker for speaking to our club about our District Literacy project. The Write to Read Project, increases access to literacy for remote areas, right in our backyard. Who knew that remote areas in our Province have limited access to literacy materials. The very essence of vibrant communities are libraries and books, literacy being the thread that weaves together all social determinants of health, education and opportunity for prosperity. The Write to Read Project originated as an initiative of former Lieutenant Governor of BC, the Honourable Steven Point. Past Rotary District 5040 Governor Bob Blacker picked up the torch and through his determination, libraries have been established in 9 remote communities. There are 10 more planned utilizing portable trailers, modular buildings and repurposed buildings.
