Wed May 26th - Zoom at Noon - Ying Wang, Director of "The World is Bright."

Filmmaking was Ying’s childhood fantasy that she never thought would turn into something real. Growing up in China in the pre-digital era, Ying became a journalist and photographer, and moved to Canada in her late 20s. When her younger sister developed a mental illness after immigrating to North America, Ying was driven to tell their story and directed her first feature Sisters as a self-taught filmmaker.

The World is Bright is Ying's second film tackling the topic of immigration and mental health from a broader sociocultural perspective. Click here to learn more!

D5040 Vocational Training Team Featured
District 5040 Vocational Training team project was featured on the May 12 Zone 28/32 Rotary Foundation virtual gala.

The Rotary Club of Richmond was the proud sponsor of Jason Chow, one of the 6 team members led by PDG John Anderson. The team travelled to Kenya on March 16, 2019 to conduct 2 weeks workshop to train teachers to teach with technology and implement 21Century Learning Skills in the classrooms.

The VTT project focused on the basic education and literacy area of focus. It didn't just change the lives of the students; it changed the Kenyan and Canadian teachers and how they will teach for the remainder of their teaching careers. The project shows the true sustainability of the work of The Rotary Foundation. (Watch video

Every amount contributed to The Rotary Foundation (Canada) is spent in support of humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs and their operations. Clubs and districts apply for and receive Foundation grants to carry out worthy projects worldwide.
Wednesday Meeting Recap
On May 19th, Richmond Rotary had a 1 hour long facilitated Peace Conversation. Trained facilitators (trained by Mediators Beyond Borders in partnership with Rotary) led the discussion. This was the first of a series of conversations for clubs around the District. The goal is to help clubs address issues within the club and within the community.

The vision is to ultimately build a strong, resilient Rotary Clubs as hubs for peace in communities worldwide

Our chosen topic was "The Impact of COVID and Engagement Moving Forward." In a facilitated conversation by District Chair Gloria Staudt and her team, we had a productive and helpful discussion. In breakout rooms, and then as a larger team as a whole, we discussed what COVID has taught us about ourselves and our community; how COVID has impacted our membership engagement; and what opportunities we see moving forward.  Having these discussions will allow us to become more effective peacebuilders within our own clubs, communities, and districts.
