The Lunar New Year, Year of the Rat, is celebrated by Countries in Southeast Asia including China, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, and the Philippines. The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first. In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus.
The Rotary Club of Richmond held it's 4th annual Lunar New Year fundraising dinner Jan 18th at the Continental Seafood Restaurant in Richmond acknowledging Chinese and Korean cultures through dance and cultural performances. Beneficiaries were Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC and St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon.
Over 250 guests attended to enjoy a repast of 10 courses, a silent auction, live auction, photo booth, raffle draw, with of course the proverbial God of Wealth. As usual per Chinese custom, a pair of Lion dancers opened the evening to bring us all good fortune and good health for the new year. Amongst those who graced our evening, District Governor Bala Naidoo, Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Christine Brodie, MP Kenny Chiu, MLA Anne Kang, Director General Andy Chen from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver.
The Rotary Club of Richmond is grateful for the kind generosity and support of their members who attended, who spent hours upon hours of volunteer time, and provided auction items, bought tickets and sponsored our evening. The Club wishes to also recognize the generous support of Youneed Massage Chair, T&T Supermarket, CBA Electrical & Security, Horizon West Insurance, Henry Lee, Resco Mortgage Investment, all the auction donors and guests who celebrated the Lunar New Year with us.
