Rotary Donates to Chimo
On Wednesday, August 25th, Richmond Rotary graciously donated $2500 to Chimo Community Services.

May be an image of 9 people and people standing
Chimo is a non-profit organization in Richmond. They provide quality services to clients, and offer support through various difficult and heart-rending crises. They have a three-pronged approach to affecting social change in Richmond, including: Crisis programs such as phones lines, counseling and transition houses; transition programs such as counselling or outreach or immigrant resettlement; and educational programs.

We were honored to make the contribution to an organization that plays such a critical role in the social welfare of Richmondites.

And thank you to Chimo for coming to our meeting to accept the cheque!

Membership's a Gift

"To me the gift of membership to Rotary has been an extraordinary gift and I thank my proposer Chittaranjan Choudhury for this most valuable life-changing gift.

Membership to Rotary has meant opening myriad opportunities for me. The opportunities to make friends, opportunities of leadership, opportunities of service, and opportunities of giving. It has influenced my life so much that service has become a way of life for me and my guiding mantra has become “Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this Earth.”

"As we bring in members, we have to remember that diversity is one of the core values of Rotary. In fact, if we look at the kaleidoscope of membership in Rotary, we find people of different color, belief, religion, sexual orientation, etc. As Rotarians we have embraced this diversity. To attract members, we need to ensure equity, meaning that we will need to be fair, we will respect equality and sameness, and that we will value diversity and inclusion."

Wednesday Meeting Recap
Kenny Zhang from CCS100 Meets with Rotary.

On Wednesday August 25th 2021, Kenny Zhang from CCS100 spoke to Rotary about his book, Canada's Chinese Gene.

The book is a discussion about, who are Chinese immigrants in Canada?

Chinese immigrants have been part of the Canadian family since before the founding of this country. Chinese workers participated in the Gold Rush of the 1850's and even the construction of the CP Railway in the 1880's.

Despite playing a critical role in this nation's founding, Chinese Canadians faced horrendous discrimination including the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Head Tax. Despite this, hundreds of Chinese Canadians still bravely enlisted in the second world war.

In modern times, we've seen large growth in Chinese immigration to Canada. This has positively contributed to our economy, culture, and society.

Unfortunately in recent months, with the outbreak of Covid, an outbreak of Anti asian hate has occurred in Vancouver. It's important to stay diligent against all forms of hate, and remember the strength that diversity provides.

You can buy Kenny Zhang's book on Amazon, or contact Kenny directly at kq_zhang@yahoo.com
