Another Successful Rotary Social
Richmond Rotarians, Yuhan Chen and Leah Cheyne hosted another successful evening social event.

In order to accommodate Rotarians who sometimes have challenges making the Lunch meeting, Richmond Rotarians have been having a monthly evening social. It's a great opportunity to get together in the evening and enjoy fellowship.

As Richmond Rotary has traditionally not held consistent social events like our new monthly social, this is an innovative idea to build friendships, on top of the good work we do.

On July 6th, 2022, Richmond Rotary held a potluck dinner at the beautiful McDonald beach.

The event was a great opportunity for Rotarians to get together for a social atmosphere in the evening. If you ever can't make the Lunch meeting, watch out for our next evening social!

Rotary International President Visits Richmond!
On Sunday, July 10th, 2022, Rotary International President, Jennifer Jones stopped by Richmond, BC and was welcomed by all four Richmond Rotary clubs.

RI President Jennifer Jones was touring the Lower Mainland last week on her Imagine Canada Tour, and made an important stop in our very own city.

Along with all four Rotary Clubs, elected officials and other important guests, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie and RI President Jennifer Jones proclaimed July 10th as Rotary Peace Day in Richmond and dedicated the Garden City Park to a future Rotary Peace Garden. Peace trees were planted in the garden area, with one of the trees named after and in honour of President Jennifer.

RI President Jennifer Jones was also in White Rock where she led a beach clean up at the White Rock Pier, and ran into Richmond Rotary's very own Angie Vanderkooi!

It was a special day for Richmond Rotary as an honor to welcome Rotary International's President as she wrapped up her Canada tour. Jennifer Jones is Rotary Internationals first female President, and she is making her mark on Rotary.

Wednesday, July 13th, Meeting Recap
On July 13th, 2022, Richmond Rotary heard a riveting presentation from Vic Yao, Global Payments System.

Vic Yao delivered a presentation about payment processing. When you purchase an item with your credit card from a merchant, there is a complex process involving different systems.  If you are a business owner, your payment processing system is an important decision.

A global payment processor is a mediator between merchants and customers, and it processes the merchant's credit and debit card payments as well as those using alternative payment methods. There are a number of payment processing options, and with the rise of crypto currency, e-wallets, and other innovations, there is a lot of information to understand before selecting your service.

Vic walked us through the complex process of payment processing systems, how it works, the costs, fees, and what to look for when selecting a payment processing system.

As there are a number of small business owners in Rotary, Vic offered his advice on what payment processing system to select for YOUR business:
  1. Do not choose the small Acquirers as they sometimes have hidden fees or are unreliable.
  2. Know your customer, know your business. Are your customers international? What payment provider should you use then?
  3. Do not sign a contract longer than 1 year for a new account.
  4. Ensure they have proper customer support.
  5. Rent or purchase, do not lease a terminal!
  6. Always negotiate your rate with your payment processor every 3 years!
