Today is Rotary's 6th annual World Polio Day, District 5040 End Polio Now Chair Brian Finley will update us on the current status of the polio eradication effort and also the highlights of his trip to India in March to participate in a National Polio Immunization Day (NID) campaign.

Communities across District 5040 are proclaiming World Polio Day on October 24th to create awareness of Rotary and our campaign for a polio-free world... Richmond, Vancouver, North Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler, Prince George, New Westminster, Powell River; West Vancouver and Delta recognition.

Cellphones Help Disease Eradication

Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative are strengthening the lines of communication by giving cellphones to health workers in Pakistan and Nigeria, to replace paper-based reporting of maternal and child health information, including polio immunization data, with mobile phone and e-monitoring technology. Health workers can use the phones to send data via text message to a central server. If they see a potential polio case, they can immediately alert officials at Pakistan’s National Emergency Operations Center. They also can note any children who didn’t receive the vaccine or parental refusals – and record successful immunizations.
