Project Amigo

Education and literacy are powerful keys to enabling a brighter future for the world's children, who in turn benefit the nations they live in. For nearly three decades, Project Amigo has helped rural children in Mexico continue their schooling up to and including at the college level. In existence since 1984, Project Amigo provides educational scholarships, material support, enrichment activities and preventive and remedial health care to disadvantaged children and youth in Colima state.

Volunteer Work Weeks based in Cofradia de Suchitlan allow volunteers from developed countries to engage in humanitarian service and become both friends and sponsors of Mexican children and youth seeking the many advantages of education.

Mary Laing, BSN, MBA

Mary’s vocation is Health Administration. She has been an active community volunteer for over 25 years and a Rotarian for 9 years. She was President of the RC of Vancouver (2012-13), chair of the 100th Anniversary Planning Team and co-produced the documentary, “100 Years of Rotary Service in BC”. Mary has been a Board member and worked on Membership, Program, Fundraising, Community Service and Nominating Committees. She is a Paul Harris Fellow. Mary is currently a member of the RC of Steveston.

Mary’s time on local community Boards in Richmond supported the development of youth through sport and the enhancement of quality care for the elderly. She had an amazing experience as an Olympic and Paralympic volunteer in Vancouver in 2010.

In 2013, Mary participated in a Rotary Polio Immunization Day in Togo, West Africa, and helped to build a village school.

In January, 2015, she spent two weeks as a volunteer tutor in Cofradia, Mexico teaching English to high school and university students as part of the Project Amigo Program.

Mary has two grown children and is a grandmother of four.
