End Polio Update - Brian Finley

Members, good opportunity to invite potential members to learn about End Polio, one of our passion !

Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending polio.

Since we started the fight against polio, we’ve reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 percent and reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine. There are fewer polio cases today than ever before, but we will not stop until we reach zero. If polio is not eradicated, hundreds of thousands of children could be paralyzed. Global health care costs would rise dramatically, and many children’s quality of life would be drastically diminished.

Brian is a member of the Rotary Club of Squamish, and past-president 2014-15. He serves as the District 5040 Chair for Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign.

He holds B.Sc. and MBA degrees from UBC, and has had a career in IT and Computer Services. He joined Rotary in 2003, while living and working in England.

Brian was an official at the Luge event in Whistler during the 2010 Olympics. He enjoy skiing, hiking, biking, and trying to play golf.

He has been a guest speaker on polio at many clubs and events in the District. He will be travelling to Ethiopia in October with a group of Rotarians to participate in the National Polio Immunization Campaign there.

“Polio is Rotary’s No. 1 humanitarian priority, We are so close, yet there is still much to do. I hope, through my role in Rotary, that I am able to make a contribution and help us get over the finish line.” - Brian Finley
