Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary - Jan Robson

Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary is a volunteer-run, registered non-profit society whose purpose is to provide rescue and protection for parrots. They:
  • strive to place parrots in new loving homes through their adoption program
  • provide education and support to parrot guardians
  • actively promote avian welfare and awareness in the community through educational seminars and presentations to local schools, colleges, clubs, and other organizations
  • oppose the breeding and selling of parrots through pet stores, bird marts or via the internet.
In recent years Greyhaven has taken in about 200 birds annually, and adopted out almost the same number.  However, in June of 2016 Greyhaven and teams of kind-hearted volunteers became involved in what may be the largest animal rescue in North America.  They saved 584 parrots from deplorable conditions at the World Parrot Refuge in Coombs, B.C. after the founder passed away and the charity that had supported the refuge collapsed.  By the end of July all of these birds had been dispersed to safe, temporary locations, and the real work of caring for them and finding homes for all of them began.  As of the end of December, 2016, they have 280 birds from WPR still in our care, and a massive bill to pay off as we continue this effort.

About the speaker:

Jan Robson is the Communication Director for Greyhaven, and has been an active volunteer for the organization for the past 14 years.  She is "parront" to five birds: 3 lovebirds, a mitred conure, and a lesser sulphur-crested cockatoo.  When she is not immersed in feathers she is employed full-time by the Alzheimer Society of B.C. as the Provincial Education Coordinator.
