Welcome to our visiting Rotarians and friends, DG Bala talked about virtual fundraising ideas, to engage ex members, Rotary e-learning and the 10 hours online course to help health care workers.

Thank you Carols Hunte, Senior Project Manager and Lena Zordan, Policy Coordinator from Metro Vancouver to present us on the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Project.

What is Wastewater? Water becomes wastewater once it has been “used” in some way which includes domestic, industrial, tropical and storm water. About 80% of wastewater comes from homes - toilets, sinks, showers, washing machines.
Project Timeline:
  • 2018-2020 Project definition
  • 2021-2030 Design and construction
  • Dec 2030 New Plant operation
The new plant is to replace the existing primary level treatment plant located on the same site in Richmond.
They analyzed three concepts and picked the one that meets the most criteria.
  • Improve water quality and the marine environment
  • Low health and safety risk
  • Low operation and maintenance cost
  • Minimize odour
  • Withstand an earthquake and sea level rise
  • Integrate the plant with Iona Beach Regional Park and the surrounding environment
  • Recover sustainable energy from wastewater
