Dr. Gary Wilson, Professor Political Science at University of Northern BC talked about the Russian/Ukraine conflict at today’s Rotary lunch.  For those who missed Rotary today, not only did you miss out on another wonderful lunch, and opportunity to meet visiting Rotarians and their families from Mexico and India, but you also missed pertinent background on what’s happening in the Ukraine.

Dr. Wilson travelled back about 1,000 years to fill in how the lands that we know as the Ukraine and Russia were much different.  From a larger Slavic empire, to lands taken by invaders, to lands divided post war and to countries defined by the downfall of the Soviet Empire…..the Ukraine and indeed Russia lands have had a colourful history.

Confusing the situation has been Russia’s claims of NATO encroachment and perhaps the successes of lifestyles by the European Union poses a threat to Russian leaders.  Whether motivated by language domains, or NATO or the EU, Russia is invading the Ukraine and millions are displaced, many have died and the world watches perplexed.

Rotary lunch is not always “top of mind”.   Rotary opportunities bring us together and we urge everyone to make a little time for yourself to feed your stomach, feed your soul and feed your mind.  Rotary is easy to attend with a simple click on the Zoom link.  See you next time.
