Members and friends, we love to see you all at Zoom to welcome our new member Vivian Wu. First time in our club history (chartered in 1962) we will be inducting a member online.

Vivian was born in Taiwan, moved to Toronto in 1993, after graduating in University, worked in Asia and settled back in Taiwan when she got married. She moved back to Vancouver in 2013 and started her own business.

Rotary Responds Covid-19 Telethon
Image may contain: text

You are invited to participate in the Covid-19 One-hour Telethon hosted by Rotary International. It will be streaming in 8 languages.

The goal is to raise over $1 million dollars to Rotary Disaster Response Fund.

Nearly $4 million in Rotary Disaster Response Grants have already been put into action on the frontlines to battle COVID-19. An additional $6.9 million in Rotary Foundation Global Grants have been approved, and millions more have been raised by Rotarians, the people of Action.
Join this live event to hear stories of hope, inspiration and gratitude from Rotarians, Rotaractors and friends of Rotary from across the globe as they share what they are doing to help their communities. The telethon will also showcase how our polio eradication infrastructure is helping to combat COVID-19.
  1. Participate in the telethon on Facebook Live on 2 May at Rotary International's Facebook Page
  2. Share this event & spread the word through your social media channels.
  3. Invite friends, family, and members of your community to watch and see first-hand what Rotary's People of Action are doing to combat COVID-19.
  4. Post on social media during the broadcast and on the day of the event using the hashtag #RotaryResponds.
  5. Donate as an individual or as a club at Disaster Response Fund.
Hello from Southern France
It is so great hearing from our Past Club President 2003-2004 Duncan McNiven now lives in Southern France. This is an example of Rotary builds lifelong friendship.

Hello from Southern France     President Ball 2003

Sharing Duncan's email....

" Régine and I are still dealing with the current situation, surviving and enjoying the great weather. We have had a few days when the temperature goes up to +25C and that's warm in the sun.

Life here is a little more restricted than it is in Canada. We have to fill-in a form on line every time we go out. It includes name, date of birth, date & time of leaving home and check off the reason for going out.

There has been some talk that after the 11th May anyone over 65 will have to stay home. We hope that is false news.

Essential stores are the only things allowed to open, the pharmacy, grocery stores and of course wine stores are open and take out restaurants. Shopping once a week, going for a walk or walking your dog for 1 hour within 1 kilometre from home and staying 2 meters apart (other that people in the same household). Surprisingly most people are paying attention to the rules.

Stay safe and stay healthy, Restez en sécurité et en bonne santé,
Duncan & Régine"
Iona Wastewater Treatment  Plant Project

Welcome to our visiting Rotarians and friends, DG Bala talked about virtual fundraising ideas, to engage ex members, Rotary e-learning and the 10 hours online course to help health care workers.

Thank you Carols Hunte, Senior Project Manager and Lena Zordan, Policy Coordinator from Metro Vancouver to present us on the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Project.

What is Wastewater? Water becomes wastewater once it has been “used” in some way which includes domestic, industrial, tropical and storm water. About 80% of wastewater comes from homes - toilets, sinks, showers, washing machines.
Project Timeline:
  • 2018-2020 Project definition
  • 2021-2030 Design and construction
  • Dec 2030 New Plant operation
The new plant is to replace the existing primary level treatment plant located on the same site in Richmond.
They analyzed three concepts and picked the one that meets the most criteria.
  • Improve water quality and the marine environment
  • Low health and safety risk
  • Low operation and maintenance cost
  • Minimize odour
  • Withstand an earthquake and sea level rise
  • Integrate the plant with Iona Beach Regional Park and the surrounding environment
  • Recover sustainable energy from wastewater
