Wed Oct 30 Luncheon - National Immunization Day by Barbara Duggan

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. Along with our partners, we have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We have reduced polio cases by 99.9

Our 3 times Past President Barbara Duggans will tell us her experience in India earlier this year taking part in Polio Immunization. Before her retirement, Barb was the Dean of Design and Communication at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Relationship between Taiwan and Canada
When Rotary meets, you never know what's going to happen or who you might meet. Last Wednesday was an auspicious day with more than a full house, 44 members and guests there to hear from our speakers.

Mr. Andy Kang-I Chen, Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver and Ruth Chang, Director Taiwan Trade Center.

There is a strong trade relationship between Taiwan and Canada and British Columbia. Commerce covers many areas, I.T., Agriculture, Transportation....and the list goes on. Travel between the two countries is very robust, with 3 daily flights and a constant flow of visitors each way.

In addition, there were congratulations all around for both Alice Wong and Kenny Chiu, both elected as Members of Parliament on Oct 21st. Our Rotary Club now has perhaps a unique situation with two MP's as members.

If you missed last Wednesday's meeting, sorry, you missed out on some celebratory cake, an informative programme and a chance to network with the Taiwanese circle of Chamber people.

Pop Classics with VMO
Support Rotary and help us to End Polio Now! Come to the Concert on Sunday Nov 17. It is co-organized by VMO and The Rotary Club of Richmond. Ten Famous Pop Classics will be performed by Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra (VMO) under the baton of Maestro Ken Hsieh, Spencer Cheung & His Dream Continues, and Loig Morin & the Band.

The VMO is a non-profit society founded by Maestro Kenneth Hsieh. Since its inception in 2003, the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra has been dedicated to providing superior orchestral mentorship for talented music graduates, helping them move from student to professional.

A charming, passionate and compelling presence on the podium, award winning Conductor Kenneth Hsieh has gained widespread attention for his vibrant performances, making him one of the most exciting and versatile young conductors on the international stage.

A graduate of both the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of British Columbia, he completed his post-graduate studies in orchestral conducting in Japan at the prestigious Toho Gakuen School of Music, and Senzoku College of Music on full scholarship. He furthered his conducting studies in Vienna, Austria with Yuji Yuasa, and in masterclass with Seiji Ozawa.

He has been the Artistic Director of the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra since 2003. In addition to his many international guest conducting engagements, he has maintained a close relationship with the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Japan, where he has conducted their Subscription, Masterworks, and Education series.
