National Immunization Day (NID) by PP Barb Duggans

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. Along with our partners, we have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.

Our 3 times Past President Barbara Duggans will tell us her experience in India earlier this year taking part in Polio Immunization. Before her retirement, Barb was the Dean of Design and Communication at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
