Fight to End Polio
District 5040 End Polio Chair Gabor Gasztonyi presented a most compelling message about the fight to end polio.  His viewpoint comes from that of a polio victim, crippled in his childhood and having to go through life challenged by his disability.  Yet, he overcame those challenges to become an award winning photographer and author.  The pictures of his time in Ethiopia were riveting.  To see those children in various stages of polio treatments and surgeries was heartbreaking, yet also, inspiring.  Although disabled himself, he participated in a National Immunization Day, and today he told his story.

"Disability should not be a barrier of your success"

Thank you AG Dean for recommending Gabor, a great way to mark the Oct 24 World Polio Day. We remind everyone that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is matching $2 to each of our dollars to End Polio.  To donate, visit Rotary Foundation Canada and let's banish polio to the history books.

Also visiting today was Joanne Hildebrandt, RC of Kitimat, Danison Buan, RC of Burnaby, 3rd time visitors Zach Segal and Elizabeth Roach, Executor Director of Rotary Hospice.

Unfortunately our Sgt-at-Arms was squeezed for time and our usual round table for happy dollars had to be cut short.

You are welcome to refer speakers to our program Chair, Jimmy Yan
Why being kind is as important as ever?
Doing good doesn’t only benefit other people. It helps us, too. Facing the COVID-19 pandemic, people everywhere are feeling anxious about their health, their families, their jobs, and their futures.

“There has been a lot of research that when we are helping others, or when we are doing something for someone else, our reward centers light up in the brain and our stress levels go down as cortisol is released.” says psychologist Mary Berge, a member of the Rotary Club of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, who has led discussions with many Rotary clubs about coping during the pandemic.

“If we engage in a regular daily practice of kindness and gratitude, we are essentially carving out pathways within our brain that make us healthier and a little more emotionally stable.” Says social worker, child advocate, and trauma specialist Jenny Stotts, a member of the Rotary Club of Athens Sunrise, Ohio.

Rotary members may not realize the significant role they can play in changing how people think, Stotts says. “When we, as leaders in our community, adapt a way of thinking — that level of intentional gratitude and intentional kindness — we have a way of setting a really good example,” she says. “I think it is a calming and stabilizing force. We can set that tone for our entire club and for our communities.”

Rotary Members Feed Thousands in Cape Town

Members of the Rotary Club of Newlands in Cape Town, South Africa could not stand by watching the devastating effects of COVID-19 on food security in their country and city. Soon after the initial lockdown period was announced, they jumped into action.

They started a fundraising campaign to raise funds for food relief on BackaBuddy, a South African crowdfunding platform. With the donations to this campaign and the assistance of various partners, they raised about 1.4 million South African Rand (more than US$80,000).

This translated to meals for thousands of children, families, and the elderly. Read more....
