Hoop-A-Thon and Rotaract - Ron Suzuki 

Rotary Hoop-A-Thon is an annual basketball fundraising event that helps hundreds of kids in East Vancouver. Money is raised by donations and pledges based on the number of successful free throws a player can sink in one minute. This year it will be held on Sat. April 22, 2023.

Since 2007, a partnership formed by D5040 Rotary clubs, Rotaract clubs and Interact clubs have raised over $500,000 for Scholarships, Youth Leadership, and Community Projects including the Strathcona Basketball Program.

Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth program in 1968 at Charlotte North Rotary Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, and has grown into a International service organization for students and young professional  (age 18 – 30ish) . Currently there are 10,698 clubs with 203,298 Rotaractors spread in 180 countries worldwide. There are currently 10 Rotaract clubs in D5040. 

Ron Suzuki is District 5040 Rotaract Chair and a member of Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise. He has been volunteering in his local community since the 1970s. He was the recreation director with the City of Vancouver until his retirement in 2016, with a focus on working with those on the downtown east side.
