State of Current Journalism
Kevin Evans, former anchor CBC TV News, presented a deep and though provoking outlook on the state of current journalism.  Is the six o’clock news steered by the wants of the advertisers, rather than the needs of the viewer?  Are journalists and media companies reporting objectively and factually?  Is there any balance to offset sensational and negative spins on newscasts?

“A very good presentation on communication and news broadcasting, Kevin shared with us his experience in news broadcasting and the its influence on the stakeholders and the community. He educated us on our responsibilities as viewers/ audience and how we can exercise our rights to endorse our news sources. It was a very insightful, informative and inspirational message, I like the positive spin of the optimistic video at the end. I hope we are able to get more speakers like him” - Past President Henry Lee

“Kevin's presentation of today's media catering to advertisers was right on the spot, and he illustrated it superbly.  His call to the public to demand more of the media does sound ideal.  I agree with him that giving control to the government is a slippery and dangerous slope"- Antonio Lee

In Financial Management, the government sets minimal guidelines for training, knowledge and fiduciary responsibilities (KYC- Know Your Client) and Self-Regulated organism are given the responsibility of enforcing it.  Any individual that does not comply would have their license revoked, and would no longer be able to continue in this line of work.  It’s a constant reminder every year that we need to keep ourselves knowledgeable in our field, and aware of our clients' goals.  Annual requirements always involve an ethics reminder.

It would be an interesting discussion to require reporters to be licensed before they can have the privilege of informing the public.  It would be fascinating to have a conversation with Kevin on the subject.

If you are reading this piece from another Rotary Club, we would highly recommend Kevin Evans as a speaker. Kevin is acting President of North Vancouver Rotary Club.

Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival
Mid-Autumn Festival takes place every year with the full moon that falls on the 15th day of the 8th month on the lunar calendar. The festivities focus on traditions and family. A lot of families celebrate by eating mooncakes while admiring the full moon.

For the past few years, our club members have been celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival as a club social.  With the pandemic this year, we were not able to have the social, but we still got into the festival spirit. Members were sharing full moon pictures and exchange greetings on What's app. The most amazing of all,  President James and his wife and daughter made us Taiwanese Mooncakes.  Thank you so much, they were delicious!

Featured Member - Dean Hsieh

Dean Hsieh

Classification: Wealth Management (Queensbury), joined the Rotary Club of Richmond Mar 25, 2015, Club President 2018-2019, D5040 Rotarian of the Year 2019, Assistant District Governor 2020-2023

Dean is dedicated to service.  Throughout his career he has been involved and supportive in many community organizations.  Among these, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, Kinsman Club Calgary, City of Richmond Board of Variance, BC Taiwan Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Chinese Consumers’ Association, Canadian Blood Service and of course Rotary Club of Richmond.

After joining Rotary in 2015, he immediately took on the role of Club Secretary and later, Rotary Foundation Chair.  He then attended Rotary Leadership Institute in preparation for his role of Club President 2018-2019.  We have Dean to thank for orchestrating Enchilada Night, a fundraiser for youth projects in Huauchinango, Mexico, which involved all four Rotary Clubs in Richmond.

Under Dean’s leadership, we enjoyed fundraising successes, 3 Pop Concerts, China International Cartoon Competition and a Paul Harris recognition event, again involving all four Rotary Clubs in Richmond.  To his credit significant sums were raised, $15,000 for Polio Eradication in 2018, $12,000 for Youth and Interact in 2019.   Such were his efforts, that the District awarded him “Rotarian of the Year” in 2019.

During his presidency, the club took on the task to rename our charitable society, Rotary Richmond Foundation.  It is to his credit that he introduced WhatsApp platform for active club communication.

Through his vocation as Financial Planner, he has built a large network of community and business associates, whom he promotes Rotary, Rotary projects and Rotary membership.  We are fortunate to welcome his referrals, namely Bill and Cindy Lau, Jimmy Yan and Hugo Li.

Dean Hsieh is a Rotarian.  He is all about service, involved at the club, on the committees and in the community.  He is the Assistant Governor for District 5040.  He is a Paul Harris Fellow.  And whilst he spends a great amount of effort and energy for the good of Rotary and the community, he still has a little time for pursuing interests in Toastmasters, skiing, golfing, swimming and instructing Qigong at the Seniors Centre.
